Abstract:
In a study of heat-sealing of polyethylenes, the T-peel fractured surfaces of bonded films of ethylene/1-octene copolymers with different 1-octene contents were characterized using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and analyzed by fractal analysis. The AFM images gave visual evidence of a strong dependence on bonding temperature, peel rate, and 1-octene content. This dependence was demonstrated quantitatively by fractal analyses. This presentation elucidates the full details of this study.

Presenter:   Hailing Yang, Institute for Advanced Learning and Research
Dr. Hailing Yang is currently a research associate at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research in Danville, Virginia. She received her BS from the Polymer Chemical Engineering Department at Tianjin University in 1996, and her PhD from the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Tech in May 2006. From 1996 to 2000, she worked as a research assistant at the National Research Institute of Silicone in Chengdu, China. She joined Virginia Tech in 2001 and has been working in the multidisciplinary field of adhesive and fracture science; her research has included evaluating the heat-sealing of branched polyethylenes and dynamic mechanical properties of PSA in paper laminates for postage-stamp applications.

An e-Live® Presentation is a simple and easy way to view a live presentation from the comfort of your home or office. All you need is a direct or dial-up Internet connection and a separate phone line to access the teleconference portion of the presentation. Approximately 2 days prior to the presentation you will receive an e-mail which will include the web address to log into and a teleconference phone number that you will need to call into the day of the presentation. You will simply log into the presentation and dial into the teleconference. There are many great features and conveniences to an e-Live Presentation. Think of the time and money you will save by not traveling to gain all the benefits of attending a presentation. There will be touchtone polling and question and answer. Each presentation is typically one hour in length.

This presentation will be recorded for future use and distribution through the Society of Plastics Engineers, Inc.
