Cooling is the one stage that remains uncontrolled, unmanaged, uncharted & forgotten. It’s understandable because, with this lack of attention, the parts still come off the machine fit for purpose. The effects of cooling neglect have become accepted within the industry as normal. The poor dimensional tolerances and the variation in crystallinity, which impact the part’s mechanical properties are the elephant in the room. However, instead of shooing it out of the room, we just move it around, persevering with the cramped working conditions and trying to make a better-shaped part. With more understanding of how cooling affects polyethylene, we might be able to engineer a solution that reduces these dimensional tolerance variations and bring us a step closer to a more controllable and dependable form of rotomolding.
