Introduction to PFAS Concerns

Joshua Jurs, the technical director of Axle Plastics, discussed PFAS concerns during the conference. With over 25 years of experience as an industrial chemist, he specializes in polymers, surfactants, and additives. His current role involves research and development of sustainable additive technologies, quality control, and regulatory compliance. Axle Plastics, a third-generation family-owned company, focuses on mold releases and process aid additives. The presentation covered both US and EU PFAS regulations. PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) have diverse applications, including surfactants, coatings, firefighting foam, medical devices, and cosmetics. The US EPA’s definition of PFAS includes fluorine-containing products, but not polymers like PTFE (Teflon). In contrast, the EU takes a more comprehensive approach, addressing specific chemicals and families.
