The Changing Landscape of PFAS - Emerging Business Risk and Future Opportunities

Presented by:
Alan Taylor, TWI

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been key components of the polymer and coatings markets for over 60 years. The inherent chemical and thermal stability conferred by the carbon-fluorine bond has been central to the widespread industrial utilisation of these chemicals and the materials into which they can be transformed. The low surface energy possessed by the carbon-fluorine bond has allowed a wide range of extremely effective surfactants and processing aids to be developed that are effective at smaller quantities than can currently be achieved with alternative chemistries. Fluorinated polymers are currently being viewed by some as essential to the development of energy generation technologies. However, concerns over the potential hazard to human health and the widespread presence of PFAS in the environment is giving rise to increasingly stringent regulations around the world with the proposed ban in the EU being the most widely known. In addition, the changing environment regarding Environmental and Social Governance, increasing litigation – particularly in the US, and the likely tightening of regulatory compliance are increasing the business risk surrounding PFAS.
